Acupuncture is based on a system of meridians, or pathways that form a network and link the tissues and organs into an organic whole. Disease occurs when the flow of Qi (energy) in the meridians becomes disrupted. These conditions can be influenced and altered by the insertion of acupuncture needles into points located along the meridians to regulate and balance the flow of Qi in the body.
Western medical studies have shown the results of acupuncture seen in blood test results and brain scans. There are measurable effects on the autonomic nervous system and, therefore, on vascular and endocrine physiology. It affects brain chemistry and neurotransmitters, including endorphins, which play a role in pain relief.
Looking from both the East and the West, these things explain why the initial feedback I hear from acupuncture patients is nearly always that they notice a feeling of calm, comfort, balance, and feeling more energy available in their life.
NEEDLES
Acupuncture needles should never have been named “needle”! Acupuncture needles are so thin that several can fit within the hollow of a standard blood-drawing needle.
Needles are sterile, disposable, and used only once. They are surgical stainless steel and regulated by the FDA.
TREATMENT
Any sensation when a needle is inserted subsides quickly. Once they are all in place, the needles are not noticeable. They remain in place, and most patients enter a state of deep relaxation or sleep for 20-40 minutes.
Many patients ask how many treatments they will need. You can answer this question yourself to some degree, because the number of treatments needed will vary according to:
*the nature of the condition *how long the condition has existed *overall health and constitution
*lifestyle: exercise, diet, stress * frequency of treatment *age
A series of treatments may be needed for a cumulative effect, especially for chronic conditions. Some conditions can be successfully treated in only one or two sessions.
The 1997 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Conference on acupuncture stated, "The data in support of acupuncture is as strong as those for many Western medical therapies and the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same conditions."
